The Lunar Luck

Chinese New Year is a lovely time to catch up with families and friends as we toss “yee sang” together signifying luck, wealth and happiness. The lunar month, which goes on for 15 days starting from the first day of New Year consist of traditional practices and must-do things to bring about good things for the coming year. Here are five things to do, or try during this auspicious month.

1. TRADITIONAL DISHES
Besides the customary “yee sang”, other must-haves include niang gao or rice cakes which gives prosperity, steamed fish, dumplings, longevity noodles and tangerine/oranges. Tangerines are said to bring lots of good luck and fortune.
2. WEARING RED
Red is known to be an auspicious and lucky colour, so wear everything red from your wardrobe this month! On New Year day, it is also believed that clothes should be brand new, and preferably in red.
3. FIREWORKS
As we hear the loud sounds every night, fireworks are actually known to ward off evil, and it’s also a fun time for kids to play and watch the sparks fly at the porch or garden.
4. ANG POW'S
Red packets of money, also known as ang pow will be given on the first and coming days of the New Year. It is known that the money in the red packet will suppress evil from the children, and keep them healthy and give them a long life.
5. ROOSTER
As this year is the year of the Rooster, keep a toy rooster at your desk or at home for continuous luck and prosperity for the coming year!
